From Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-actualization):
"As Abraham Maslow noted, the basic needs of humans must be met (e.g. food, shelter, warmth, security, sense of belongingness etc.) before a person can achieve self-actualization".
Interesting, is sense of belongingness necessary?

On a societal level, I believe so. How bout on a social circle level?

Glad you liked 'em.

Great YouTube vid.

You ever watched 'Ip Man'? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ip_Man_(film) I'm gonna rewatch this soon, as well as the second one, as I have a feeling they're gonna mean something totally different to me now than when I first watched them. One thing I can clearly remember is the way Donnie Yen (the guy who played him) carried himself with total humility, and yet a composed dignity and power that were impossible to ignore. Wonderful combination. I can remember enjoying watching him simply walk.

Interesting, is sense of belongingness necessary?

On a societal level, I believe so. How bout on a social circle level?
From the same link:
Quote:
The next level is "the belongingness and love needs", where people will strive for social acceptance, affiliations, a sense of belongingness and being welcome, sexual intimacy, and perhaps a family.
I have actually been coming across the issue of "being accepted vs. individual expression" quite frequently in both my reading and my forays on the 'Net. This seems to be one of the tensions of human existence, and is seen by many to be a balancing act. This topic is one of the (many!) things that I have in mind to explore in the future, as I have always been a fierce individualist. Although I haven't really explored it in detail, i'll share my thoughts on it (biased towards individuality, of course) so far:

First off, one could argue that a sense of belongingness comes from within, and not acceptance by others. Eg even if others reject me, it is up to me to FEEL that I belong - to know that what I have to offer is worth contributing (to those that have what it takes to see its value).

Also, I like what I like, and am into what I am into, even if a lot of my tastes are what many consider to be esoteric. To me a lot of what the average person out there consumes in terms of entertainment is mind-deadeningly boring anyway, and also, in many cases, harmful to their psyche. But so far, my individuality has not had any severe social repurcussions, or any feelings of isolation, only occasional accusations of being "strange", "different", or sometimes outright rejection, criticism, or ridicule by persons who are too shallow or uninteresting to be of any enjoyment to me, anyway. The ridicule & rejection can sting sometimes, but I seem to be getting better at handling it - letting it go (or let it be). Also, I more often than not feel that it's their loss, not mine. [Also, totally besides the point, but I find that some women really dig it when you have your own interests and don't simply follow the crowd  ]

Also, I enjoy spending huge amounts of time alone, and don't really feel a need to have people around me. My ego is fucking me over in many ways, and i'm looking into that, but loneliness/isolation is not one of them.

Basically to me, belongingness, as described in the quote above, would only supercede my individuality in matters of survival. I interact with society for food, water, shelter, etc. and am perfectly willing to cooperate with it on these matters.

Caveats:
1) what I refuse to accept or participate in can change over time, as I gradually find over time that life isn't as black-and-white as I think it is.
2) I am starting to experience that the more accepting I am of others as they are, the more likely (but not certain!) that they will accept me too, as "different" as I am, and as conformist as they may be, and
3) I have always been very wary of becoming someone who is different for the SAKE of being different. My feeling is that if I do what I do simpy to shock others, that is being as dependent on them as "fitting in" would be. A few years ago I noticed guys started getting piercings all over their faces, and doing all kindsa stuff to themselves to be (or appear ;) ) different. Whooptey-fucking-doo! I neither have tattoos nor any piercings at all, but when I go out to a bar or something and look around, and I see guys like this on the one hand, and then guys who only wear designer labels on the other (I wear what feels good on me, and what has a look on me that makes me feel "Yep, that's me.") - - - - I STAND OUT. Basically, these people who do this shit to "be different" or "express their individuality" are only wearing another uniform. Exceptions are those who do it because it has a personal significance for them....

ALL conflict is between the desire for safety and the desire for freedom.
