Sometimes when I am having a conversation with a girl, the girl will position herself so that is is standing to my side. Her shoulders are in a 90 degree angle with my shoulders. She will be talking in/towards my ear over my shoulder.

The weird thing is that when I try to turn towards her, she will step away towards my back. As if she is afraid to stand directly in front of me. It is almost like a have a laserbeam coming from my chest and it is dangerous for her to stand there... :? I once even made a full circle this way! She kept stepping away when I turned towards her.

The following pictures will make it more clear I hope, because it is kind of difficult to explain in words.

In this next picture the situation is reversed. I will be in the position of the woman and the women in the position of the man.

In the pictures the woman is sometimes touching the man. This is not always the case with me. She might be like 2 feet away.

Have you guys ever noticed this? What does it mean? Why does she step away? Why is she afraid to be directly in front of me?

Hmmmmm...I would attribute it to a slight case of subconscious intimidation and respect. Like a deer, sudden movements will frighten and scare them away...why do you feel like you HAVE to square up with her anyway? Her talking to you is not enough? Do you feel like you need to exert your dominance? Like it makes you feel insecure or something? :|

Don't miss the Kiddz point.

Have you been in a fight before? How were the two of you facing each other?
Have you watched a fight before? How were the two of them facing each other?

I disagree with the Kidd that it marks intimidation, but I do agree with him that facing another person is confrontational. If you have ever argued with a person, every time you argued, you will realize how you faced the person.

I also do not agree that this position is a sign of respect unless she's leaning into you heavily and speaking in hushed tones, which even in that case denotes something different from respect--closer to lust.

I do believe it is attempt to gain your trust. It is almost as if the person is trying to show they are on your team. They are halfway between being side by side to you and halfway between being face to face with you. If you note how men do this then you will see what I mean. The friend with less power will take this stance occasionally and as the male with more power comes to like, agree, or get interested with what they are saying he will slowly orient his self more towards the friend. It will be first as a 30, 45, 60, and then 90 degree angle until they are parallel.

My mind slips me, but this is essentially a power play of kind. It is really liminal in nature and establishes the order hierarchy. Understand from the perspective of person that is facing you at a 90 degree angle. They are giving you their unbridled attention.

Now you have the solution. Brownie points if you can rationalize why the women would create space so quickly in your presence after you turn to face them, and extra points if you can rationalize what happens to the interaction after the two people get face to face.

For a very practical reason! Whenever I want to say something back to her I have to turn my head. Sometimes she is even slightly behind me, like the woman in my avatar, only closer to me. I just get tired of turning my head all the time, it is a very awkward stance to be in. So I automatically turn towards her.

No. Actually I don't try to do anything at all. I just try to have a normal conversation. I certainly don't try to be "alpha" or dominant. I don't look very intimidating anyway. Trying to be dominant is kinda unnatural for me and whenever I tried it, it backfired. These days I am just being ME.

Yes, that is kind of what it feels like.

Ah, OK... You mean that I unconsciously try to exert my dominance. I will have to think about that... I don't think so, but I will dig deeper...

Sidenote: the lady that did talk to me like this last Saturday tried to kiss me at the end of the evening... in front of her boyfriend. So I must be doing something right! :D
